Asbestos free-fibre contamination release - Remediation

An asbestos free-fibre contamination event recently occurred, when asbestos containing roof sheeting was impacted by high pressure cleaning in a residential area. Friable asbestos material contaminated both the emanating and adjacent properties. Bluestone environmental was engaged as the on-site occupational hygienists to manage the decontamination and remediation works and perform environmental monitoring and remediation validation.

Decontamination

Decontamination occurred across several weeks in carefully planned sequences, to eliminate cross contamination of surfaces and materials, while being effective with resources and implementing suitable control measures.

Working with Class A asbestos removalists Rabek Pty Ltd. The team were able to effectively achieve an asbestos clearance certificate to the QLD WHS standards, while maintaining airborne asbestos fibre counts within acceptable criteria at all times. A very pleasing result for the occupants, public and adjacent property owners.

Asbestos in Soils Investigation - Make-safe /PSI / DSI / RAP / Validation

Historically, the risks of asbestos contamination were poorly understood. This often meant relaxed methodology was employed with regard to the demolition of asbestos containing structures. Consequently, it is a common occurrence to encounter soils with asbestos contamination within them at sites where buildings were demolished and re-built during the mid 1900s..

During a free fibre asbestos contamination release, which triggered public safety risks. Bluestone Environmental undertook a series of investigations on the property in question to:

 - Determine a scope of works to effectively remediate the free fibre asbestos contamination risk.

 - Develop a conceptual site model for in-situ asbestos contamination within soils,

 - Set quality control targets to determine successful remediation targets for future land use.

Working with Class A asbestos removalists, Bluestone Environmental implemented the full scope of the remediation works and contamination clean up, to successfully deliver an asbestos clearance certificate for the site, and reach compliance with the criterion for the given land use.

Demolition of burned housing

Bluestone Environmental were engaged to both project manage and provide environmental services for the demolition of two asbestos containing houses, partially destroyed by fire.

Burned houses containing asbestos are often left in a condition where asbestos fibres are able to be liberated from the material into the atmosphere easily, and this requires specialised controls to be implemented during demolition works.

Bluestone, as principle contractor, developed the requisite management plans and engaged all suitable contractors to effectively demolish both houses to the requirements of the local council in addition to providing the following:

Waste Classification for exported soils:

Soils to be transported off-site to a receiving waste facility require an appropriate waste classification as per the EPA's contaminated lands legislation. Bluestone Environmental was able to test in-situ soils within the remediation footprint to allow for timely disposal of materials, post structural demolition.

Asbestos air monitoring and hygiene services:

During the demolition of structures, asbestos must be removed prior to the demolition of the remaining structure, with a clearance provided from a Licensed Asbestos Assessor or other suitably qualified person. In the case that the superstructure of the house is deemed friable, the demolition must occur under 'friable' conditions. Bluestone Environmental provided SafeWork NSW Licensed Asbestos Assessor oversight of the demolition processes and methodology, undertaking asbestos air monitoring during the removal process and validating the removal, post demolition to ensure an asbestos clearance certificate could be issued.

Comprehensive Mould investigation - Public Schools

Bluestone Environmental was subcontracted to investigate the speciation, extent and vectors for mould contamination within a number of public primary schools.

Utilising airborne spore traps, biotape sampling and material moisture comparison techniques, Bluestone Environmental's environmental scientists were able to develop a conceptual site model which presented speciation, contamination extent and likely vectors within the effected parts of the school structures.

Using the conceptual site model, and reference to international standards for remediation, Bluestone Environmental developed a remediation action plan, including control methods and methodology for the encountered species and contamination extent.

Post Removal Validation -  Bluestone Environmental offers mould remediation post remediation validation. Our occupational hygienist recently validated mould removal work, controls and methodology, including comparative assessments of indoor and outdoor fungal ecologies.
